I can’t say enough good things about all the people at Gaspar’s Dive Shop and the wonderful dive I recently had with Joe and Matt aboard their local dive boat, the “Tooth Fairy”. Finally, a local dive boat in Charlotte County! However, for me the total experience didn’t just start with the dive boat but at the dive shop. I was first certified in 1978 and may have over 500 dives, but I have not been diving for at least 3 years. While preparing for the dive I found that my chest BC jacket was leaking so I visited the shop and Stephanie, the shop owner, informed me that it could not be repaired. Fortunately, I had inherited a back inflatable BC but never used it. It’s currently the Fall season and the water temps are now in the mid to high 70’s and not around 90 like the last time I dove off Venice wearing skins. Stepanie, Spero and Joe all warned me about the colder water. Stephanie and Alexa helped me pick out a 3mil wetsuit the day before the dive and advised me on how much weight to use so I was prepared. Joe and Matt are very knowledgeable captains and divers. The boat is decked out well for diving with a good boarding ladder and rear entry platform plus a cockpit canopy that protects you from the sun. You are allowed bottom time of up to 1 ½ hours which is more time than what I remember is allowed by the Venice boats. Matt was a big help coaching me about how to suit up and use the back inflatable BC as opposed to the chest variety BC. Joe put us on spots that had 6-9 feet of visibility. I cut the first dive short to only 40 minutes because of a leg cramp. The 2nd dive was particularly great for a 30 foot Florida west coast dive. Better than any dive I did off Venice because it was on a ledge with an abundance of marine life. I saw schools of Sheepshead, Spanish Mackerel, Spadefish, small Snook, White Grunts, Tomtates, occasional Lane Snappers and even Spot Fin Butterflies. Other people also saw Cobia. I was down for over an hour and didn’t want to leave, but I felt that I was getting too far away from the boat. Some people recovered teeth, and I recovered a 3-4” Dugong rib. We were all in good hands with Joe, Matt and Gaspar’s Dive Shop.

Gaspar’s Dive and Board has been our go to for diving needs for well over a decade. They are reliable, always helpful, and kind people. They are a wonderful asset to our community and beach town. They have even guided us with finding the “just right” snorkel gear for our son as he became an emerging swimmer. My husband and I recently went on a 2 tank fossil find and we had a wonderful time. Joe and Matty were great hosts and guides. They made the dives so easy with providing tanks, water, snacks, as well as safely deploying from the dive boat. We will definitely be tagging along again!
