| Legend holds that Spanish pirate Jose Gaspar roamed our waters in the 1800's, preying on unsuspecting ships. In a final battle with the American Navy, his ship in danger, and choosing not to be captured, Jose Gaspar climbed to the bow of his ship and yelled, "Gasparilla dies by his own hand, not the enemy's". He wrapped the anchor's chain around his waist and holding his cutlass high in one hand, he jumped into the dark waters, disappearing below the weaves. |
